Which Sunscreen To Use???

We need Vitamin D for healthy bones, strong heart and healthy immune system. While it’s added (often in synthetic form) to products, the American Medical Association admits in a 2009 report that “The human body is designed to manufacture vitamin D3 from sunlight.”
It’s a fact that wearing sunscreen with a minimal SPF 15 reduces our body’s ability to naturally synthesize vitamin D by 99%. However, there are times when we always wear sunscreen.
Generally, if we’re ever in direct sun for longer than 30 minutes, or indirect sun for longer than 90 minutes, we wear sunscreen. During summers or any sunny day, it’s a ritual to apply sunscreen before stepping out in the sun to protect our skin from getting tanned.

I am confused!!!!!!

One side I know my skin and body needs sun and the other side I also need to protect my skin from sun…… what does this mean????? Why do I need to use sunscreen if our body needs sun???
While we normally suggest allowing your skin to get a good amount of sunshine to provide your body with ample Vitamin D, we do not condone soaking up the sun until you are burnt to a crisp.
Avoid getting too much sun by following some simple sunny day guidelines-

  • Avoid being outside during the middle of the day
  • Seek shade under a tree, umbrella, etc.
  • Wear a large-brimmed hat
  • Cover exposed skin

  • Avocado Oil (SPF 4-10) – nourishes and moisturizes skin
  • Raspberry Seed Oil (SPF 30-50)
  • Sesame Oil (SPF 4-10) – easily absorbed and provide natural sun protection
  • Coconut Oil (SPF 4-10) – contains natural SPF properties

Which Sunscreen To Use03

PROS – Nano or micronized zinc oxide has been treated to reduce the size of its particles, creating an ultra-fine powder. When added to sunscreens it does not leave a white film on the skin, thus making it a popular choice in many commercial sunscreens.
CONS – The problem with this is that the particles are so small that they can enter the body through the skin, causing potential health problems. If purchasing from a company, be sure to purchase a non-nano zinc oxide that has particle sizes as large as possible. (Anything with a particle size smaller than 100nm is considered a nano particle – the zinc oxide we found is 330nm.) Different amounts of zinc oxide are needed depending on what SPF you would like your lotion to be. The zinc oxide must be a certain percentage of the weight of your ingredients. For example, if you have 2 ounces of lotion and you’d like to make SPF 10 sunscreen, as per the values below you will need to add 0.2 ounces of zinc oxide to the lotion.

  • For SPF 2-5: Use 5% zinc oxide
  • For SPF 6-11: Use 10% zinc oxide
  • For SPF 12-19: Use 15% zinc oxide
  • For SPF >20: Use 20% zinc oxide

Recipe I


  • 1 oz. coconut oil
  • 0.8 oz. Shea butter
  • 0.1 oz. jojoba, sesame, or sunflower oil
  • 0.1 oz. Vitamin E oil
  • 30 drops essential oils, optional –15 lavender, 10 eucalyptus, 5 peppermint
  • zinc oxide powder

Mix coconut oil, Shea butter and jojoba/sesame/sunflower oil to double boiler
Gently heat until Shea butter melts
Once melted, remove from double boiler and allow cooling
Wear a mask covering your nose and mouth (to avoid breathing in the fine particles of zinc oxide powder)
Measure and add zinc oxide to the mixture
Add vitamin oil and essential oil
Stir well and store in a dark jar in the refrigerator
(Do not store for more than 4 months and should be refrigerated when not being used. The oils it contains are photosensitive, so do not leave your homemade sunscreen sitting out in direct sunlight. Keeping it in a cooler will prevent it from melting in high temperatures when taking it to the pool or beach)
Direction to Use:
Apply to the exposed skin before stepping out in the sun. Reapply every few hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.

Recipe II

Homemade Sun block- Waterproof (Approx 20 SPF)

  • 1.5 oz beeswax
  • 1.5 oz Shea butter
  • 1.5 oz coconut oil
  • 1 oz zinc oxide
  • 10 drops of essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint (optional)

Melt the beeswax, Shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler
Remove from heat and the mixture cool down a little
Measure and add zinc oxide (don’t forget to wear the mask)
Stir well and pour into molds
Refrigerate the molds

Homemade Sun block – Lotion (Approx 20 SPF)

  • 2 oz Shea butter
  • 2 oz coconut oil
  • 1 oz zinc oxide
  • 8 drops of essential oils like lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint (optional)

Melt Shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler
Remove from heat and the mixture cool down a little
Measure and add zinc oxide (don’t forget to wear the mask)
Let cool completely before use. Store at room temperature
